Baix Ebre-Montsià PDO
Baix Ebre-Montsià oils are extra virgin oils produced from the morruda, sevillana and farga varieties and are located in one of the oldest and most extensive growing area of Catalonia, with 50,000 hectares.
Baix Ebre-Montsià is an extra virgin olive oil produced in the regions of Baix Ebre and Montsià in Catalonia and occupies the oldest and most extensive growing area of Catalonia, with a surface area of around 50,000 hectares spread between the Baix Ebre and Montsià districts.
The oils of El Baix Ebre and El Montsià are extra virgin oils of excellent quality which is why they were granted the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). These oils are produced in of the oldest and largest olive tree growing areas in Catalonia. Currently, twelve producing cooperatives are registered in the Regulatory Council who sell five different brands. The varieties included under this PDO are morruda or morrut, sevillenca (both native to the area) and farga. The most widely grown variety is morruda, which occupies 50% of the surface area.
This oil is greenish-yellow to gold-coloured and has a bitter and spicy aroma. The flavours and smell of this olive oil resemble that of green fruits. All stages of processing and production of this oil, including bottling, must take place in the regions of Baix Ebre and Montsià.
Tours & Excursions
At the end of February the Entidad Descentralizada de Jesús, in Tortosa organises the Oil Fair of Las Terres de l'Ebre. Over the entire weekend during which it is held visitors can buy oil produced in the Ebro districts. However, in addition to oil which gives the fair its name, it is also possible to participate in tastings of traditional products such as oysters, mussels, honey or local confectionery (cakes, garrofetes del Papa, coquetes de sagí, tortosins, menjar blanc, etc.). Moreover, other events are held at the same time such as olive stone-throwing, an aioli contest or a tasting of oils and olives.
Coinciding with the Oil Fair, the capital of El Baix Ebre also holds gastronomic day events dedicated to olive oil. Local restaurants prepare recipes such as roast tomatoes with olive oil, cream of aubergine with virgin oil and monkfish medallions and potato with the aroma of rosemary oil.
